Building hope: Title deeds, housing information for Ocean View residents

Residents of Ocean View are recent beneficiaries of title deeds as part of the City’s ongoing title deed handover campaign, which is taking place across the metro. The City is working hard to create more homeowners by handing out deeds, providing security of tenure and contributing to financial stability. At the same time, the City held a roadshow event to give residents the opportunity to speak to City staff on their doorstep.

‘The City is working hard to create more homeowners by handing out deeds, providing security of tenure and adding to financial stability. Residents are encouraged to visit our roadshows when we are in their area to see if the title deed for their property is on the list of available deeds. Claiming the deed will formalise ownership and give security of tenure.

‘Our roadshows are an opportunity for residents to interact directly with Human Settlements officials who are available to offer real time solutions to queries and answers to questions. All Departments are available at our roadshow events and are able to provide information on a number of matters including title deeds and the housing needs register, C3 notifications and tenancy management issues, information about specific projects and affordable housing information, and informal settlements across the metro. We are serious about attending to residents’ matters in their area and bringing services closer to them.

‘We have been running our successful roadshows and Title Deed campaign for some time now and we’re not done yet. Stay tuned, Cape Town, more is on the way. We aren't only creating home owners, but we are building hope in Cape Town, Together,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.

If you or a family member is a beneficiary of a City unit without a title deed, here's what you need to do:

The title deed email request must include the following information:
Subject: Erf number and Area
Body of the email:
• Name and Surname: (The name in which the title deed is registered)
• ID number
• Address

National criteria for applying for a housing subsidy through the City of Cape Town:
• You have to be over the age of 18.
• You cannot own any other property or have previously owned property.
• You must be married or living with a partner, or single with financial dependants (who are able to prove their dependency).
• If you are 60 years of age or older or if you are disabled you may apply as a single person.
• You have to be a South African citizen, or must have a permanent residence permit.
• You must be legally competent to sign a contract.
• You cannot apply if you receive a national government housing subsidy already or if you are married to someone who does.
